Fairtrade - Guarantees a better deal for Third World Producers

Supporting Fairtrade and local produce

About Fairtrade

The ethos behind Fairtrade is that producers in developing countries should receive a fair price for their produce, and not be exploited, so that shoppers in the developed world can get goods for less. The FAIRTRADE Mark shown here is an independent consumer label that appears on products (not specific brands) which guarantee that Third World producers are getting a better deal.

Fairtrade in the Canterbury district

Since August 2004 Canterbury City Council has been working with the Canterbury District Fairtrade Network to seek and maintain "Fairtrade Zone" status for the district. In February 2005 the Council passed a resolution to support Fairtrade and local produce in the Canterbury district.

In March 2006 the Canterbury district was awarded Fairtrade Zone (district) status by the Fairtrade Foundation. At the same time the University of Kent was awarded Fairtrade University status, and Canterbury Cathedral was awarded Fairtrade Church status.
