Fairtrade - Guarantees a better deal for Third World Producers

Supporting Fairtrade and local produce

About Fairtrade

The ethos behind Fairtrade is that producers in developing countries should receive a fair price for their produce, and not be exploited, so that shoppers in the developed world can get goods for less. The FAIRTRADE Mark shown here is an independent consumer label that appears on products (not specific brands) which guarantee that Third World producers are getting a better deal.

Fairtrade in the Canterbury district

Since August 2004 Canterbury City Council has been working with the Canterbury District Fairtrade Network to seek and maintain "Fairtrade Zone" status for the district. In February 2005 the Council passed a resolution to support Fairtrade and local produce in the Canterbury district.

In March 2006 the Canterbury district was awarded Fairtrade Zone (district) status by the Fairtrade Foundation. At the same time the University of Kent was awarded Fairtrade University status, and Canterbury Cathedral was awarded Fairtrade Church status.

News

2009 Fairtrade Fortnight
During the annual Fairtrade Fortnight, thousands of activites take place around the country to raise awareness of and support for Fairtrade. This year Fairtrade Fortnight runs from Monday 23 February to Sunday 8 March. A wide range of activities and events are taking place across the Canterbury district, including Fairtrade stalls, talks, a Fairtrade quiz and a Fairtrade Fashion Show.

New Fairtrade Guide
The new Fairtrade Guide to Canterbury, Herne Bay and Whitstable has been produced by the council and the Canterbury District Fairtrade Network. This includes shops, supermarkets, cafes, restaurants, and Traidcraft stalls which sell or use Fairtrade products.

The Guide also provides information about local produce, farmers' markets, food halls, local farm shops and box schemes.

Local support for Fairtrade keeps on growing...
Support for Fairtrade continues to grow across the Canterbury district. Over the last three years the number of Traidcraft stalls and shops and cafes in the district which sell or serve at least two Fairtrade products has been steadily growing:

2007:    65 outlets
2008:    96 outlets
2009:    116 outlets
