If your home needs essential repairs (like re-wiring or a new roof) or if you need to carry out improvements (like installing a bathroom or hot water system) we may be able to help you if you receive means-tested benefits or if your income is slightly over the qualifying level for benefits.
a) If you are the owner we will try first of all to help you to borrow the money you need to pay for the work if this is feasible.
b) If borrowing is impossible we may award a grant of up to ?10,000.
c) If you are a tenant we will try to get the landlord to attend to the repairs, but you may still get help with other things.
d) If the work is very expensive we may be able to help you with the cost of moving to a different house instead.
For many owners, borrowing money to pay for home improvements can make good sense because it can enhance the value of your home and enable you to pay for the kind of improvements you'd like, not just the things the Council says you should have. If you decide to pay for work by borrowing, the Council may assist you by paying the arrangement fees, valuation fees, legal costs etc for you. As an added safeguard, the Council may also offer to guarantee the loan.
