If you disagree with a decision we have made about your Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Benefit, you can ask us to look at it again. If we don't change our decision you may have the right to appeal to an independent tribunal.
If you want us to reconsider our decision you should write to us within one calendar month from the date of our decision letter. Your letter must tell us what you disagree with and be signed by you.
You can also ask us to explain our decision.
If you want us to explain our decision you should write to us within one calendar month from the date of our decision. The time we take to reply will not affect you appeal rights as they will be extended to cover the time taken to reply the request for an explanation.

Decision letter dated: 13.09.06
Appeal rights expire: 13.10.06
Request for explanation received: 03.10.06
Explanation takes 5 days.
Appeal rights now expire: 18.10.06
You can still write to us after the one calendar month time limit has expired.
If you want to us to reconsider our decision and it is later than one calendar month after the initial decision you should write in. Your letter must tell us what you disagree with, explain the reason for the delay and be signed by you.
Once 13 calendar months have passed from the date of the initial decision we may not have to reconsider the decision even if you ask us to.
