Frequently asked questions

Providing disabled facilities?

If your home needs to be altered so that a person with disabilities can live there safely and easily a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) may be available.

You'll need to read the Disabled Facilities Grant leaflet
, or contact Homestay (our Home Improvement Agency) on 01227 742 252 to get further information.

a) If your home cannot be adapted satisfactorily we may be able to help you with the cost of moving to a different house instead.

b) If the cost of the work, even with a Disabled Facilities Grant is more than you can afford, we may be able to help you to raise the extra cash you need.

If the work you need is very minor, typically no more than a few hundred pounds, a small grant may be paid instead of going through the full Disabled Facilities Grant process. This sort of grant is especially useful if work needs to be done urgently, for example to help you carry out minor works of adaptation so that someone can come out of hospital.
If you find that you are expected to make a contribution from your own resources towards the cost of adaptation, but cannot afford to do so, you may be able to apply for Housing Assistance (provided you have explored other ways to raise the money first)
