Frequently asked questions

I am moving do I need to cancel my direct debit for Council Tax?

No.

If you are moving to another property within Canterbury City Council's area, when we update our database the direct debit details will be transferred to your new account and you will be notified of the new monthly payments for your new address.

Any credit that arises for your old address as a result of the account closing will be transferred to the account for the new address before your new instalments are calculated.

If there is any unpaid amount outstanding on the old account this will be collected by direct debit at the next instalment date.
You will be notified of the amount due.

If you are moving out of the area and have told us the details, we will either:

If your account is in credit, cancel the direct debit arrangement when we close your account and refund the credit to your new address,

or

If your account has a balance remaining to pay when we close your account, advise you of the amount and collect it by direct debit at the next available instalment date.
