Frequently asked questions

My new property has the same Council Tax band as my previous one, why are my instalments higher?

Have you moved to Canterbury City Councils area from another councils area?

If so, the amounts charged for each band will have been different, and based on that council?s spending needs, which will not be the same as Canterburys.

If you have moved within Canterbury City Council?s area you may have moved from one parish to another, or out of one of the towns into a parish. The total amount for the year is the same for Canterbury, Whitstable and Herne Bay, but each household in the parishes of the rural areas has an additional amount to pay.
You can see what this amount is for each parish under
Parish Charges for the current year.

If none of these reasons applies please check the total amount you are being asked to pay, as opposed to the instalment amounts. You may have a different number of instalment dates.

Sometimes, while we are in the process of moving you from one property to another on our database, an instalment date can go by without a payment being made. The missed amount will be divided up between the remaining instalments for the year. This may have happened because you were waiting for us to issue you with a new bill and didn?t make your payment, or, if you pay by direct debit, it is usually because of the amount of notice we have to give to your bank, and to you, about changes we make.
