Frequently asked questions

I am a disabled person, can I get a reduction in my Council Tax?

Property related If the property you live in has been adapted to suit your needs, it may qualify for Disability Relief, even if you are not the Council Tax payer. This would mean a reduction in the bill to the amount for the valuation band below yours, and in the case of the lowest band (A), a reduction of 1/9th in the total bill. See

"People with disabilities".

Person related If your disability means you have to live on a low income, you may be entitled to Council Tax Benefit.

See "Benefits". If you live alone, or are the only person over the age of 18 years in the property, or the only other person living with you is a full time carer (not your spouse or child), you are entitled to a 25% discount on your Council Tax.

See "Discounts".

You can have either or both of the last two reductions and still apply for a reduction in banding, if your house has been adapted.
