Frequently asked questions

What is a relevant change of circumstances?

If a determination from a Rent Officer is being used in the calculation of your housing benefit that determination usually lasts for 52 weeks.

We can only re-refer your rent to the Rent Officer before the 52 weeks have expired if there is has been a relevant change of circumstances.

The type of change that will allow us to re-refer will depend on the type of determination that the Rent Officer previously made.

The types of changes that may count as a relevant change are:

1) the number of occupiers of the dwelling changing, or
2) the composition of the household changing, or
3) there has been a substantial change in the condition of the dwelling, or
4) there has been a substantial change in the terms of the letting agreement, or
5) there has been a rent increase which has been made under the terms of the letting agreement.

If you think that you have had a change that may allow us to re-refer your rent please tell us about it. Remember that the Rent Officers original determination may limit what changes are relevant for your circumstances.
