If you own a property in the Canterbury City Council area which is not your main home, you may be entitled to a reduction in the Council Tax you have to pay. For most people from 1st April 2004 this will be a 10% discount from the total charge.
However, some people may qualify for a 50% reduction. If you pay Council Tax for a Band A chalet which you aren't able to live in continuously for at least 28 days each year due to planning restrictions then you will be entitled a 50% discount. We are already aware of most of these properties and should have applied the correct reduction to your bill already. If this is not the case, please contact Customer Services on 01227 862 300 so that we can send you a correct bill.
If you own a property in this area but have to live somewhere else due to your work, you may also be entitled to a 50% reduction. This applies to people who are liable to pay Council Tax on both properties but are required under contract to live in the property provided by their employer, or people who must live elsewhere for the proper performance of their duties, eg armed forces personnel, ministers of religion or tenant pub landlords.

How do I know if I should be getting a 50% discount?
If the property is no-ones main place of residence but remains furnished, you are liable to pay Council Tax on both properties and your contract of employment specifies that you must live in your other property, you will be entitled to a 50% discount. To claim this, please forward a copy of your employment contract to us and we will send you a correct bill. For some people, such as tenant farmers and resident school caretakers it may be normal for a property to be provided for you to live in, but this is not mentioned in your contract. If this applies to you, please contact Customer Services on 01227 862 300 as you may still qualify.
Who will not qualify for a 50% discount?
1) people who are self employed, as they cannot be contracted to live elsewhere if they are not employed. This would also be the case for owner pub landlords. 2) people who work abroad, as they they will not be liable for Council Tax in other countries. 3) people who live in a property as it is more practicle to be closer to their job but are not required as part of their contract of employment to live there. For example, if a person owned a property in Canterbury but worked in Devon and decided to move into a property in that area as it would be impossible to commute would not automatically qualify for the higher discount.
