Frequently asked questions

I can't afford to pay the difference between my benefit and my rent/council tax, what can I do?

If you are suffering financial hardship, you can ask us for a Discretionary Housing Payment (DHP).

A DHP can only be awarded to help with rent if you qualify for Housing Benefit.
A DHP can only be awarded to help with Council Tax if you qualify for Council Tax Benefit. Qualifying for Second Adult Rebate does not count as Council Tax Benefit for this purpose.

Please note:

Applying for a Discretionary Housing Payment does not necessarily mean you will be awarded one, it is a cash-limited fund and we have to consider your individual financial circumstances.
