Frequently asked questions

What are Housing bands?

Everyone who joins the Register will have their application placed in one of five bands. Applicants in Band 1 will have the highest housing need, those in Band 5 the lowest.

We work out what band your application will be placed in by considering your housing needs. The factors, which we take into account, are explained in the question "What are the housing needs factors?". If, for example you are considered to have a high medical need, you will be placed in the top, Band 1.

A combination of three factors from a lower band will place your application in the band immediately above. If you qualify for factors in different bands, your application will be placed in the higher of the bands. If no housing need factors apply to you, your application will be placed in the lowest band, Band 5.

Once your application has been placed in a band, your position in that band will depend on the date your application was first assessed by us. This means that if you were assessed by us a year ago you will be in a higher position than other applicants in the same band who were assessed less than a year ago.

You can only improve your position within a band with time, no new applicants can be placed above you within each band.
