Frequently asked questions

Why do I have to pay back the benefit overpaid when you paid my landlord?

It is your claim and your overpayment; due to your change in circumstances. The only exceptions are if you have moved or your landlord knew or contributed to your change in circumstance.

If we have decided the landlord would not have known about your change in circumstance we will recover the overpayment from you.

You have benefited from receiving the the benefit onto your rent account/or your rent liability has been covered as we paid the landlord direct.

It is the same as if you had received it, as the money is for rent only and would have been paid to your landlord anyway.

If your landlord did not know about your change in circumstances, he or she could not have told us to stop an overpayment. They would not have realised they were being overpaid and we cannot recover the overpayment from them.
