Frequently asked questions

Can I claim benefit if I am working?

If you are working, you may still be entitled to Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Benefit.

You need to fill in a 'change of circumstance' form and provide proof of your earnings. We need consecutive payslips:

Five if you are paid weekly
Two if you are paid monthly/four weekly
Three if you are paid fortnightly
We will calculate your net weekly wage, by taking off any payments of National Insurance and Income Tax, and 50% of any pension contributions that you make. Other deductions you pay are not taken off in the benefit calculation.

If you do not have wage slips, you can get a form from us for your employer to fill in. You can print a copy of our 'certificate of earnings form' from our online form rack.

If you get any Tax Credits, we need to see your full notification letter from the Inland Revenue.

If you are self-employed, we will need to see your most recent accounts. If the business is new, or has been running for less than one year, then please complete the form 'self employed earnings' , you can get this from the online form rack, at any of our offices, or you can call our Customer Services Section on 01227 862 300, and they will send one out in the post to you.
