Although we are the 9th highest for recycling in England we are not satisfied with this result. As the amount of waste residents produce is increasing annually we would fall back down the league table if we do not recycle more each year. The top three authorities in the country already have Alternate Weekly Collections.
Space in landfill sites is running out. Canterbury's will be full by 2017 and we urgently need to find a solution to the problem of where our waste will go.
Households in the Canterbury district produce more than 62,000 tonnes of waste a year. Currently, around 27 per cent of that is recycled using the city council's clear sack scheme. While this is the highest in Kent, the council wants to be even better.
We believe that by introducing the new waste collection service many more have to start recycling and help us in our bid to be one of the best recycling councils in Britain.
We also have tough government targets to meet on recycling and could be in line for financial penalties if we fail to do so.
