Frequently asked questions

Why is the council reducing the service and increasing council tax?

Many residents report that the clear sack scheme has resulted in their domestic bin being only half full on collection day.

The council wishes to increase the amount of material recycled without increasing its contract costs.

The council is required to meet government targets. Failure to do so could result in substantial financial penalties.

Only 50 per cent of council residents are regularly recycling at present and we need to increase this figure to meet the targets.

The landfill site where most of the waste is taken will run out of space around 2017.
The cost of refuse collection, recycling and garden waste (including the provision of garden waste bins and sacks) is less than 80 pence per household per week - less than a Mars bar and a packet of crisps.
