Frequently asked questions

What is the council doing about protecting allotments?

The provision of allotments is a statutory obligation, and if there is sufficient demand then councils have to address that. Allotment sites have some protection under the council’s local plan. One of the aims of the allotment strategy is to ensure that allotments are given due consideration and further protection under the planning system. The laws of allotments are by and large in need of revision, however, allotment provision is linked to the planning process, and if a site needs to be disposed of, then compensation and relocation is a requirement.
