Filming in Canterbury
"There is no lovelier place in the world than Canterbury"
Virginia Woolf
Canterbury City Council aims to promote and facilitate all types of productions (film, television, drama, documentaries, student, stills, international and domestic) whilst assisting filmmaking in the Canterbury district to ensure that your shoot runs as smoothly as possible.
Just over an hour away from London the district of Canterbury has something to offer all filmmakers, from a modern day city to quaint fishing towns the district has a mixture of traditional and modern locations that are truly inspirational.
Canterbury
The Stunning cathedral takes centre stage of the city, yet the ancient ruins of St Augustine's Abbey and the ruins of the Norman Castle are reminders of the city's history and culture. The River tour meanders through the vibrant city, crystal clear waters offer a home to ducks, swans, fish and other wildlife while the river banks are home to bending willow trees and flowers of all colours. Small cobbled alleyways join the main high street in the centre and offer all the modern conveniences of a city centre.
Whitstable
Whitstable is the first stretch of beach outside of London on the Kent coast, a traditional fishing town famous for its seafood in particular the oysters. Whitstable's nostalgic charms, a strong arts culture and rich maritime history sit easily with its renaissance. Along the coast at Tankerton, grassy slopes dip to meet the sea throwing out an invitation to visitors and locals to walk along the prom and take in some bracing sea air. There's a chance, too, to get unsurpassed view of Whitstable skyline from The Street, a wide ridge of shingle stretching out to the sea, but only revealed when the tide is low.
Herne Bay
Along the coast from Whitstable lies the traditional seaside town of Herne Bay, its Victorian architecture and two miles of splendid seafront offer traditional British coastal favourites in the shape of candyfloss, ice cream parlours, friendly pubs and fish & chip restaurants. The brightly coloured beach huts lining the coast reflect the great character of this seaside town.
Countryside
The district is not just about its breathtaking coastline, travel for just 15 minutes in any direction from Canterbury's bustling city centre and you'll find yourself in the heart of East Kent's countryside. Jam-packed with historic villages, secret places and wild open spaces.
