Icelandic banking crisis and council funds
Canterbury City Council has a total of £6 million invested in one Icelandic bank and one UK subsidiary of an Icelandic Bank. More than 100 councils are similarly affected and in total £858 million invested by councils is now at risk as a result of the collapse of the Icelandic banks.
The council is, however, working through the Local Government Association to seek to ensure that Government gives councils the same guarantees as it has given to private investors. The council finds itself in this position through no fault of its own. It has invested prudently and in accordance with government guidance.....
