Safer Community Partnership

Canterbury Community Safety PartnershipSafer Canterbury District Partnership

The 1998 Crime and Disorder Act placed a statutory requirement on responsible authorities to form Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships (CDRP) to work together to reduce crime, disorder and the fear of crime in their local districts. The Canterbury CDRP is called the Safer Canterbury District Partnership.

The Canterbury partnership's membership is made up of statutory and non-statutory agencies, community and voluntary groups. This includes Canterbury City Council, Kent Police, Kent Fire & Rescue Service, Probation, Neighbourhood Watch, Crimestoppers, Primary Care Trust, Education and the Youth Offending Service. If you feel that your organisation could make a worthwhile contribution to the Partnership, please contact the Public Safety Unit. A full membership list is available.

The Partnership's new Community Safety Plan 2009-2012 has been published. Please use the link below to view the document.

Safer Canterbury District Partnership Plan 2009-2012

When the public are asked "what makes a place good to live in?", a low level of crime is always among the top priorities. Recorded crime in this area is down significantly but often this doesn't effect how people feel about their safety. We in the Safer Canterbury District Partnership believe that while we drive crime down, we must listen and respond to what the public are saying. Local people care very much about what happens on their own streets. Things like anti social behaviour, criminal damage, graffiti, litter, alcohol misuse and drugs misuse.

We have to produce a strategic assessment annually to update the partnership plan. The assessment identifies those things in the area in most need of attention. These priorities each have an action plan made up outlining what is to be done in the year ahead.

The plan aims to make the area safer by tackling crime, disorder, anti social behaviour and harm from drugs and alcohol. In this way we aim to reduce fear of crime, improve community safety and the quality of life of everyone in the Canterbury District.
