Community Development and Outdoor Leisure

There are six teams that make up Community Development and Outdoor Leisure.

Business Unit

The Community development Business Team is responsible for the main administrative functions within the department whilst also assisting in maintaining the well-being and growth of local communities. Our main purpose is to provide effective and efficient general adminstrative and operational support for the six teams within Community Development and Outdoor Leisure, to have responsibility for the adminstration of the Concessionary Travel Scheme and to provide administration and secretarial service to the Head of Community Development and Outdoor Leisure and the management team.

Children & Youth Team

We are dedicated to working with children and young people aged five to 18 years; we aim to encourage personal and social development through positive play in an 'out of school, out of home' setting. In April 2006 the Children and Youth Team worked with an action group of young people to create a website specifically for young people called Notbored.

Neighbourhood Development Team

The team's aim is to build skills and knowledge of individuals and groups in priority areas of the district, by providing services such as advice and support to the community and voluntary sector, so that groups or individuals can make informed choices, influence decision makers and develop solutions to local issues.

Outdoor Leisure

Outdoor Leisure is responsible for the development of policies, strategies and planned improvements for parks, open spaces and play areas. Admire the colourful displays of flowers, watch a band play in the park, play tennis or sit quietly by the river, play safely with your children, walk in the shade of magnificent lime trees, discover the secret wildlife of our district's towns. These are just some of the acitivities you can do in the Canterbury city council's parks and open spaces.

Foreshore

One of the district's major natural assets is the 14 and a half miles of coastline stretching from Seasalter in the west to Reculver in the east. The coast is particularly popular with day visitors and water sport users.

The Foreshore services team is directly responsible for water safety (including provision of Lifeguards), education and advice, information signage and management of council licensed beach huts.

This includes the management and delivery of educational/environmental initiatives with local groups, organisations and schools. Management of public launch ramps and the 'Seaside Pleasure Boats' byelaw.

Foreshore services area is also responsible for the management and delivery of various coastal award programmes such as Quality Coast (QCA) and the world recognised Blue Flag.

Halls

There are three halls within the Canterbury district managed by Community Development and Outdoor Leisure, Westgate Hall and Guildhall located in Canterbury and Kings Hall which is located in Herne Bay . All three halls are available to hire for corporate or personal use.

SureStart (Riverside Children's Centre)

SureStart is a government funded initiative that has been established to work within the local communities, supporting local families to promote the physical, intellectual and social development of young children under 5. The aim is to maximise and enhance local opportunities, enabling children to realise their potential, flourish at home and when they get to school.
