Free swimming lessons for over 40s

26 April 2010

Canterbury City Council and Active Life are offering free swimming lessons across the district to non-swimmers over the age of 40.

The scheme is designed to increase water skills and confidence for adults who would like to swim but have never learnt how to. Class sizes will be kept to a maximum of 12 people and will be led by qualified instructors, with a range of activities aimed to provide a basic swimming ability.

Lessons will take place at Kingsmead Leisure Centre in Canterbury, Whitstable Swimming Pool and Herons Swimming Pool in Herne Bay and will run every eight weeks from the start of May.

New lessons will then take place every eight weeks until Christmas and then start again in the new year until March 2011. Up to 200 people will benefit from the scheme over the year.

Those over 60 will then be able to take part in the government’s free swimming initiative, and swim for free in any council-owned pool.

The lessons have been arranged by the council and Active Life, with funding from the Amateur Swimming Association and the Eastern and Coastal Kent NHS Trust.

Free swimming lessons are also available for adults with learning disabilities. All lessons will be offered on a first come, first served basis.
