Allotment gardening
Many years ago, families relied on allotments for their survival. Some people may recall and others will have heard of the more recent 'Dig for Victory' campaign during the Second World War.
Nowadays, allotment gardening for many is more of a pastime. It provides an excellent, low cost opportunity for all ages to grow and enjoy their own fresh fruit and vegetables. You can meet others who have similar interests, sharing any knowledge and experience. It is also highly recommended healthy outdoor exercise.

Allotments were first laid our as 10 rod or perch plots, which were sufficient in size for a typical turn of the century family. Today this size of plot (250m2 approx) is more than most people would require. On many sites, smaller or half plots are available and provide a manageable starting point.
Traditionally, local councils have controlled allotments. Increasingly, plot holders are forming their own organisations and participating in the management of their own sites with the Council.
