Business Rates
All business properties are assessed for a rateable value by the Valuation Office Agency, an executive agency of the Inland Revenue.
There is a revaluation of all Business Rates properties every five years. The current list took effect from 1 April 2010 and is available on the Valuation Office website at www.voa.gov.uk
There is also a government website which provides information about the revaluation and Business Rates in general: www.mybusinessrates.gov.uk
Each year central government sets a 'multiplier'; an amount which is multiplied by the rateable value to arrive at the amount of Business Rates payable for the year. This may be the amount you have to pay, but it could be changed by the transitional phasing in of any increase or decrease resulting from a revised rateable value, or by any other reliefs you may be entitled to.
The money collected by the council for Business Rates is collected on behalf of the government, and paid directly into a central government pool. It is then redistributed to local authorities in proportion to the number of Council Tax payers in their area.
The multiplier in 2009/2010 was 48.5 pence and the Small Business Rates multipler was 48.1pence.
The multiplier for 2010/2011 is 41.4 pence and the Small Business Rates multiplier is 40.7 pence.
