Amazing facts and helpful hints on Recycling

Did you know?

  • Around 30 million vehicles are on the road in the UK, with 40 million tyres being scrapped in the UK each year.
  • Thousands of people in developing countries need all types of clothing. Ask yourself, if someone needs top clothing, wouldn't they need something to wear underneath.
  • Roughly eight million disposable nappies are thrown away every day.
  • The average person gets through 38kg of newspapers each year? Every tonne of paper that's recycled can save enough energy to power a three bedroom house for a whole year!
  • The energy saved by recycling one aluminium can will power a television for three hours.
  • Recycling one glass bottle or jar saves enough energy to power your television for one and a half hours.
  • 150 million plastic carrier bags are used every week. And they take 100s of years to degrade.

Helpful hints!

  • Old tyres can be recycled to become sports and play surfaces, paving slabs and internal floor tiles, or carpet underlay and soles of shoes.
  • You can dispose of two tyres a year for free at the Household Waste Recycling Centre.
  • Consider using cloth nappies to reduce nappy waste to landfill.
  • Don't bin useful clothing. Clothing banks will also take adults' and childrens' underpants and bras, socks, girdles, pyjamas, nightdresses, slips and vests
  • Recycling paper makes sense because it's so useful and can be made into many new products such as loft insulation, paints and even airport runways and Formula One racetracks!
  • You can raise money for your favourite cause by collecting aluminium cans and taking them to a 'cash for cans' programme.
  • Most supermarkets often have bottle banks. Why not take your glass with you when you do your shopping?
  • Buy items in glass and can packaging whenever possible, they are easier to recycle.
  • Always reuse your plastic carrier bags or, better still, opt for a 'bag for life'. Most supermarkets offer a 'bag for life' scheme.
