Transportation Team

What the Transportation team does...

While most matters relating to roads are now the responsibility of Kent County Council, the city council's Transportation team look after several important functions at a local level.

In particular, we look after most parking issues on roads in the area and we maintain the lines and signs associated with parking on roads.

We will continue to have an input into traffic and parking policies. A number of strategy documents have been drawn up including the Canterbury District Transport Action Plan, the Canterbury Parking Strategy, the Draft District Bus Strategy and the Draft District Walking and Cycling Strategy.

We also helped to create the council's new policy on abandoned bicycles in public places.

We can help with enquiries about bus shelters, street nameplates and street naming and numbering and we can advise you about the Kent Karrier Dial-a-Bus service.  We can tell you about existing and proposed cycle routes and we are also a lead partner organisation of the Kent and Medway Walking Bus Group.

Motorists in Kent are being encouraged to cut down their fuel costs and reduce congestion by registering online with Kentjourneyshare, the first public car sharing scheme in Kent.  Canterbury City Council is one of several employers who have registered with the scheme.

Parking Regulation Reviews

The Parking Regulation Review (PRR) process deals with requests from the public, councillors and others for changes to parking restrictions.

Parking Restrictions are defined in legal documents called Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs). The process of amending a TRO is costly in terms of staff time and legal costs. Proposals also have to be advertised in local newspapers and on the affected streets. In order to deal with these requests in as economical a way as is practicable all of the requests received during each calendar year are dealt with together in that year's Parking Regulation Review.

What happens next?

All of the proposals received during 2009 have been considered by councillors and the Executive decided which items to take to consultation at their meeting on 4th March.

Visit the PRR 2009 page to read other information about the consultation process.
