Questions and answers about food waste recycling in your communal property

You can find additional information about food recycling for properties with communal waste collections, such as flats.

Questions about food waste

When will my food waste be collected?

Food waste collections in flats began on Monday 30 March 2026. Your food waste will be collected on the same day each week. However, it might be on a different day to your other waste collections.

If your food waste is collected on your usual collection day, it may be at a different time to your other collections because a separate vehicle will collect it.

What equipment do I need to use the service?

You will receive a free 5-litre kitchen caddy as part of the service launch.

This should have been delivered to your doorstep before collections started on 30 March 2026.

If you didn’t receive your free kitchen caddy, please contact our bins and waste team on 01227 947 860.

We will have also given you orange-lidded communal food waste wheelie bin for you to empty your caddy into. This should be stored with the rest of your communal bins.

I don’t have much space in my kitchen for a caddy, what should I do?

Most people find keeping their caddy under the sink, next to the kitchen bin or on the worktop is practical.

Is recycling food waste smelly?

Not if you empty your kitchen caddy regularly into your communal food waste bin and make sure to tie up the liners. Separating your food waste not only means less smells in your kitchen bin, but there will also be lots more room in your communal general waste bin.

The communal food waste bin has an orange lid to help stop any smells getting out and any pests getting in.

How much time and effort does recycling my food waste take?

It takes seconds to recycle your food. Just line your kitchen caddy, scrape your scraps into it and, when full, put the tied up bag into your communal food waste bin outside as often as you need. We’ll do the rest.

What food can I recycle?

You can recycle all your food waste, including scrapings, peelings, raw and cooked out of date food.

You can find out more about what goes in your food waste bin.

I don’t produce much food waste – will it really make a difference if I recycle it?

Yes - just a single recycled banana peel can generate enough electricity to fully charge your smartphone twice. So, even the smallest of scraps can make a real difference.

Does it cost more money to recycle my food?

No – in fact it’s cheaper to recycle food waste. Because food waste is mainly made up of water, processing it as part of your general waste uses lots more energy.

This makes recycling a more energy and cost efficient way of disposing of your food.

Will my communal general waste bin still be emptied if I put food waste in it?

Yes. We will still collect your communal general waste bin if it has food in it, but we’re asking everyone to do their bit by recycling their food waste.
