Your business rates

How we work out your business rates

We work out business rates based on the property's 'rateable value'.

This is the open market rental value on 1 April 2015, calculated by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA).

Your rateable value is then multiplied by a figure set each year by government. The standard multiplier is 50.4p in every pound of the rateable value before any rate relief or discounts you may get are applied. From 1 April, it will be 51.2p in every pound.

If your business has a rateable value of below £51,000 (known as a small business) then it's 49.1p in every pound. From 1 April, it will be 49.9p in every pound.

We'll send you a bill confirming the amount you need to pay. You can also use the GOV.UK tool to estimate your business rates.
