Canterbury Business Improvement District

If your business is in the Canterbury Business Improvement District (BID) area, you'll shortly be asked to vote in a postal ballot on the next BID scheme, which will run from September 2019 to September 2024. You should get your ballot papers on or around Thursday 13 June.

A BID is a business-led, business-funded partnership which carries out improvements and provides services in a specific area. They are funded by the businesses that benefit from them and the money can only be spent within the BID area on initiatives that have been agreed in a formal business plan.

They can be developed in any business location that has rate payers, and can be proposed by any rate payer, property owner, local authority or other key stakeholder with an interest in the area. 

Businesses must vote in favour of a BID before it's created. You will pay for any potential scheme through a supplement in your business rates bill.

A successful vote for a BID must meet two criteria:

  • more than 50 per cent of votes cast must be in favour of the BID; and
  • the positive vote must represent more than 50 per cent of the rateable value of the votes cast.

A BID is set for a maximum of five years. After five years there must be another vote, based on a new proposal.
