Small business rate relief

You can get small business rate relief if:

  • your business only uses one property with a rateable value of less than £15,000 or
  • you use more than one property but the rateable value for each of your other properties is less than £2,900, and the total rateable value is less than £20,000

You can only get a discount on one property and the amount you will get depends on the rateable value of your business.

If your rateable value is £12,000 or below it will be 100%.

If your rateable value is between £12,001 and £14,999 then relief will go down on a sliding scale from 100% to 0%.

For example, if your rateable value is £13,500 then you'll get 50% off your bill. If your rateable value is £14,000 it will be a 33% discount.

The government has announced a grant of £3,000 for businesses that get small business rate relief. We will publish more information on how this is going to be given as soon as we can.

Supporting small businesses

If you lost some or all of your business rate relief or rural rate relief in 2017 due to the revaluation of rateable value, we will limit any increase in your rates to £600 per year.

The scheme will apply for a maximum of five years and relief  will be automatically applied each year.
