Business rates relief

Local discretionary discount

The government has given us a set amount to help local businesses who have had a large increase in their business rates bill following the 2017 revaluation.

You may get up to 21% off the increase to your bill in 2019/20 if:

  • the rateable value of your business property has increased as a result of the 2017 revaluation
  • your rates were higher as from 1 April 2017 than on 31 March 2017 (after any discounts and other relief have been given)
  • you're not getting charitable or rural rate relief
  • your business occupied the property on 31 March and 1 April 2017 (and every other day relief is being requested)
  • you're a local business (national or international won't be considered)

You won't be eligible if:

  • your business moved into the property after 1 April 2017
  • the property is used for educational purposes (such as a school or college)
  • the property is occupied by a local authority
  • you've applied for a discount under S44a of the Local Government Finance Act
