Smoke control areas
Many parts of the UK are smoke control areas. This means you can't emit smoke from a chimney unless you're burning an authorised fuel or using an exempt appliance, such as a boiler or stove.
You may be fined up to £1,000 if you break the rules.
What you can burn in smoke control areas
You can burn any fuel on the list of authorised fuels plus any of the following 'smokeless' fuels:
- low volatile steam coal
You can use outdoor barbecues, chimineas, fireplaces or pizza ovens. Garden bonfires are allowed but must follow bonfire rules.
Unauthorised fuels such as wood can be burned in exempt appliances like boilers, cookers and stoves.
