The Lady Mayoress

The Lady Mayoress of Canterbury

Lady Mayoress Julie Spooner was born in Dartford and educated in Swanley at one of the first comprehensive schools in Kent. Always a keen sportswoman participating in most sports, she represented Kent at netball and trampolining.

In 1975, she joined the Kent Police Cadets and later that year was stationed at Sevenoaks, when she was the first woman police officer to do the same job as a policeman.

She met Colin, also a police officer, and they married in 1981. She then transferred to the Metropolitan Police, where she served for four years.

In 1992, Julie joined the Kent Police Driving School based in Maidstone as one of their civilian driving instructors and still works there today. She teaches a wide range of courses ranging from basic level through to advanced, incorporating response driving, pursuit and skid training. She also holds a licence to drive buses and articulated lorries.

Julie and Colin moved to Whitstable in 2007. They have three daughters - Clare, Elaine and Gemma.

Her hobbies are watching all types of sport, and cheering on her country. She is a season ticket holder for Chelsea football Club and is a keen follower of Kent Cricket.

Julie's chosen charities for her year in office are The Strode Park Foundation and SNAAP Special Needs Advisory Activity Project. Both are very worthy local charities that she is looking forward to supporting.
