The Lady Mayoress

Picture of the Lady Mayoress of Canterbury, Sue Westgate

Lady Mayoress Sue Westgate was born in Margate and educated at the King Ethelbert school in Birchington. After leaving school she worked as a sales assistant at the Sample shoe shop in Margate before moving on to be employed by Hilton’s shoe shop in the town.

It was during her time with Hilton’s that she met Terry who managed the Canterbury branch and they married in 1976. She continued to work in the shop that Terry managed before they set up their own business, a dancewear and fancy dress shop in Canterbury, in 1986. They continued to work together for the next 20 years until retiring in 2006. Sue and Terry have one grown-up daughter called Mandy.

Sue’s hobbies include all things craft related and includes knitting, crocheting, embroidery, quilling, scrap booking and card making. Like Terry, she also enjoys gardening.

Her chosen charities for her year in office are the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance and Age UK Canterbury. Both are very worthy local charities which she is looking forward to supporting.
