Major developments

As part of the Local Plan, some major developments are being considered within Canterbury, Herne Bay, Whitstable and the surrounding villages.

Mountfield Park (South Canterbury)

This would provide:

  • 4,000 new homes
  • land that will be used for employment, supporting up to 3,700 new jobs
  • a range of community facilities and
  • a new A2 junction.

Land at Sturry Road and Broadoak

This would provide:

  • 1,000 new homes
  • land that will be used for business
  • a range of community facilities
  • a new car park for Sturry train station and
  • provision of, or a contribution to, a Sturry relief road.

Hillborough site, Herne Bay

This would provide:

  • 1,300 new homes
  • an extension to the existing business park
  • community facilities
  • a new link between the business park and Thanet Way
  • a new slip road on to Thanet Way and
  • improvements to the A291 corridor.

Herne Bay Golf Course

This would provide:

  • 600 new homes
  • sports and leisure facilities
  • healthcare provision
  • a new footpath and
  • a cycle path to link this site with Strode Farm.

Strode Farm, Herne Bay

This would provide:

  • 800 new homes
  • a range of community facilities
  • a new highway linking Thanet Way to Bullockstone Road and
  • a new footpath and cycle paths to link this site with the golf course.

Land at Greenhill, Herne Bay

This would provide:

  • 300 new homes
  • a range of community facilities
  • healthcare provision
  • leisure facilties
  • provision of, or a contribution to, primary school education and
  • space for allotments.

Thanet Way site, Whitstable

This would provide:

  • 400 new homes
  • an extension of Duncan Down Country Park and
  • additional public open space.

Land north of Hersden

This would provide:

  • 800 new homes
  • a new community building
  • play areas and allotments
  • healthcare provision
  • improved footpaths and cycle network
  • provision of, or contribution to, a Sturry relief road and
  • improvements to the A28 corridor.

Land at Howe Barracks, Canterbury

This would provide:

  • 400 new homes
  • retention of significant parkland and open space and
  • provision of a new A28-A257 link road.

Land at Ridlands Farm and Langton Field, Canterbury

This would provide:

  • 310 new homes
  • a range of community facilities
  • provision of public open space
  • a multi-use games area
  • a contribution to education and
  • provision of a fast bus link route between South Canterbury Road and Mountfield Park.

Land at and next to Cockering Farm, Thanington

This would provide:

  • 1,150 new homes
  • land that will be used for employment
  • provision of open space
  • allotments
  • a range of community facilities
  • healthcare provision
  • additional woodland planting
  • a new slip road at Wincheap and
  • a contribution to the expansion of Wincheap Park and Ride.

Land south of Ridgeway (John Wilson Business Park), Whitstable

This would provide:

  • 300 new homes
  • land that will be used for employment
  • provision of, or a contribution to, primary school education
  • a range of community facilities
  • improved public open space
  • healthcare provision and
  • highway improvements.
