Find out how to apply for a horse premises licence and the documents you need.
Under the Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018, if you run a business to keep horses and hire them out for riding or lessons, you must have a licence.
| Licence type | Fees to pay |
|---|---|
| First application | £149.06 to apply which is non-refundable, and a further £233.31 if the licence is granted. |
| Renewals | £116.65 to apply which is non-refundable, and a further £149.06 if the licence is granted. |
You'll also need to pay any vet fees. As part of the licence, it's a legal obligation for a certified equine vet appointed by us to attend all inspections. If the licence runs for longer than 12 months, you will have a yearly vet inspection and must pay all related fees.
To see what needs to be in the documents, you should check the hiring of horses supporting documents guidance.
You must check the documents list to make sure you submit the right evidence.
