Find out how to apply for a licence to board dogs or cats and the documents you need.

If you run a business which provides accommodation to other people's cats or dogs, you need an animal boarding licence. Boarding licences are split into three categories:

  • animal boarding
  • dog day care
  • domestic dog boarding

Make sure you choose the right option for your business on the application form.

Licence type Fees to pay
Animal boarding £181.50 to apply (non-refundable) and a further £264 if the licence is granted. You'll also need to pay any vets fees.
Dog day care £137.50 to apply (non-refundable) and a further £170.50 if the licence is granted. You'll also need to pay any vets fees.
Domestic dog boarding £137.50 to apply (non-refundable) and a further £170.50 if the licence is granted.

As part of your application you'll need to submit copies of the following:

  • plan of the premises
  • operating procedures
  • insurance policy
  • risk assessments (including fire)
  • qualification and training records
  • infection control procedure

You'll need to return your form and supporting documents to envhealth@canterbury.gov.uk. You can also email the team if you have any questions before applying.

To pay the application fee you can:

  • call 01227 862 427 to make a phone payment
  • send a cheque made payable to Canterbury City Council
