What to do when a child or baby dies

Check what to do after a child or baby dies - find a funeral director, access funding and ongoing support

Losing a child or baby is very difficult, and the process of dealing with arrangements can be overwhelming. We have a simple guide of what to do to make things as easy as possible.

When the child or baby dies

You can get a certificate of baby loss if you want to, but you don't have to.

Your care provider will give you the documents you need to make your arrangements.

Once you have these, you should contact a funeral director. Some directors offer a free service, so it is worth contacting them to check what their fees are and tell them what kind of service you would like.

They will guide you through the process and work with us directly where necessary. You will need to complete an interment form and submit any other documents from your care provider.

Get help with funeral costs

A funeral for child lost between 24 weeks gestation and 18 years are covered by the Child Funeral Fund (CFF). This is not means tested and is available to anyone.

For a child under 24 weeks gestation, the standard purchase fees apply. However some funeral directors will still offer a free service. We will not charge you an interment fee.
