What is Levelling Up?

The Levelling Up Fund invests money in projects to regenerate towns and cities.

It is a programme run by the UK government to support local areas to:

  • create jobs and boost the economy;
  • protect culture and heritage; and
  • improve local transport.

The fund was launched in 2020 as part of the government's 'levelling up' plan, which aims to give all areas in the UK the same opportunities, reducing inequality and improving the wider economy.

Local councils like us can bid for funding to support projects in our cities and towns. The programme will provide up to £4.8 billion of funding to councils and other public bodies in England over four years (2021 to 2022 and 2024 to 2025).

It sits alongside other government programmes like the Towns Fund, the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, and the Transforming Cities Fund, that support areas to 'level up'.
