Our journey to net zero

Find out how we're meeting climate change actions.

Our climate change plan is split into 23 actions. Some of them we have a direct impact on, like our vehicles and buildings, and some we'll work with partners on, like supporting local businesses to reduce their emissions.

Since 2021 we have:

  • switched our light fleet vehicles to electric
  • installed charging points at our offices and in a number of car parks
  • completed a clean air zone feasibility study
  • drawn up plans to convert a council-owned house in St Peter's Street, Canterbury into an energy efficient home that will meet net zero emissions
  • successfully bid for funding from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme to improve energy efficiency in Kingsmead Leisure Centre
  • successfully bid for funding from the Levelling Up Fund to help invest in a greener city
  • trained staff in carbon literacy so they know how their activities impact the environment

There's lots more work to do, and our draft Local Plan sets out new policies for heating and powering new buildings and reducing local transport emissions.

We've also set out an Electric Vehicle and Infrastructure strategy to develop charging infrastructure for residents, businesses and visitors:
