Buying your council house (Right to Buy)

Find out if you can buy your council house from us at a discounted price.

Right to Buy allows most council tenants to buy their council house. You can check if you can buy your house on Own Your Own Home's website.

You can normally buy your house if:

  • it’s your only or main home
  • it’s self-contained
  • you’re a secure tenant
  • you’ve had a public sector landlord (for example, a council or housing association) for three years - this does not have to be three years in a row

Once you've submitted an application to buy your house we'll only carry out repairs that we have a legal duty to do, like gas or water problems.

No more improvements will be made to your home while your application is ongoing. For example, if you are due a new boiler or kitchen, your house will be removed from the planned maintenance programme.

If you are removed you may not be added again if your application to buy is not successful or you decide not to go ahead.
