Keeping a pet in a council house

You must ask for our permission to keep a pet like a cat or a dog in your council house.

The type of property you live in means there are different rules if you want to keep a pet.

If you:

  • have a garden you can keep a pet in your home as long as it's well behaved.
  • don't have a garden you'll need to ask us before getting a pet that needs outside exercise. Any pets you do get must be taken out for exercise away from shared areas of the property.
  • live in sheltered housing you need to check with the independent living team.

You're not allowed to keep any dangerous wild animals or any farm animals, like sheep or pigs.
