Apply for a film classification

If you want to show a film to the public, it must be given an age rating and content advice.

You can ask us to give a rating (known as classification) for a film that's never been rated, or to reclassify one that has been rated by the BBFC or another licensing authority.

You do not need to get a film classified if:

  • it's being shown in an art gallery or museum,
  • it's only or main purpose is to show a product or advertise something, or
  • it's only being used for information or education.

Your film must not break any laws or legislation, including the Obscene Publications Act 1959 and the Copyright Design and Patents Act 1988.

You're responsible for applying for any relevant licences and copyright permissions to show it, including permission from the Cinema Advertising Association if your film has any adverts.

It's free to apply for a classification. You should submit your application at least two weeks before you want to show it.
