Apply for an environmental permit

Find out when you need an environmental permit and how to apply.

You need an environmental permit if you or your business does an activity that could:

  • pollute air, water or land
  • increase flood risk
  • adversely affect land drainage

You'll be breaking the law by carrying out these activities without a permit.

Apply for a permit

There are three types of permit depending on what activities you'll be doing.

Part A1 permit

Sites that are likely to have a greater environmental impact on land, water and air come under this category. You need to apply for a Part A1 permit from the GOV.UK website.

Apply for a Part A1 permit from the Environment Agency

Part A2 permit

Medium sized sites which might have a large environmental impact on land, water and air come under this category.

Part B permit

Smaller sites which might cause emissions in the air to rise normally fall under this category. This includes things like vehicle resprayers, dry cleaners and petrol service stations.

To apply for either a part A2 or part B permit you need to contact our environmental health team and include:

  • where your business or buildings are
  • a description of what you want to do

We'll let you know what happens after that and how much you need to pay.
