Do you have the time and skills to make a positive and independent contribution to the Board of Directors of Canenco as a Non-Executive Director?
We are looking to appoint two independent Non-Executive Directors to the Board.
The Canterbury Environment Services Company Limited is a Local Authority Trading Company (LATCo) owned by Canterbury City Council with contracts to provide waste collection, recycling, street cleansing, grounds maintenance and environmental services.
Shortlisting Criteria
Director or Management level experience with a market leader or a large local authority environmental services department in:
- Waste collection and Recycling
- Public sector contract management
- Public sector procurement
- Regulated service delivery
- Local authority governance
- Audit, risk and assurance
- Street Cleansing, Grounds Maintenance and Environmental Services
Desired skills
Strong commercial and contracting expertise in:
- Service Contracts
- Fleet and asset management
- Operational efficiency & productivity improvement
- Supplier management
- Performance benchmarking
Independent Corporate Governance Experience with a with strong knowledge of:
- A Director’s duties as set out in the Companies Act 2006
- Board effectiveness
- Governance assurance
- Shareholder relationships
Independence
Given the independent nature of this role, you should be someone who:
- Has not been a Councillor or officer of Canterbury City Council or any other local authority within a period of five years immediately prior to the appointment
- Is not a relative or close friend of a Councillor or officer of Canterbury City Council
- Is aged 18 or over
- Is not active in local or national politics, or a member of a political party or pressure group that would
- Has no current or significant previous personal, legal, business or contractual relationship with the Council (including employees, Councillors or former staff), or any other relationship or activity which might represent a conflict of interest or compromise their impartiality
Terms of appointment
- The appointment will be for an initial period of three years, with potential to be extended.
- You may be required to be contactable during normal working hours by telephone or by email and to be available to attend meetings, which may be held in the daytime or the evening at least once a month.

- Interviews for those shortlisted to take place ideally in person or remotely. The interview panel should where possible consist of: An existing board member, a member of Canenco’s management team and the MO or S151 Officer.
- An allowance of £5,000 remuneration per year is payable for this role.
