Lift safety in your council home

How to apply for a stairlift or hoist, and our responsibilities for maintaining all lifting equipment.

All our buildings with lifting equipment installed have thorough and regular checks set by The Lifting Operations and Equipment Regulations 1998 and Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.

The maintenance of lifts is carried out by our qualified contractors, and we hold all the documentation from service and maintenance visits.

Home adaptations

If you think you need a stairlift or hoist at home, you can apply for a home adaptation. There is a long waiting list at the moment.

Remove a stairlift or hoist

Keep your stairlift or hoist safe

You must:

  • not install any lifting equipment without applying for a home adaptation first
  • keep your stairlift or hoist clean from dust and dirt
  • report a problem with a stairlift or hoist straight away so we can arrange for an appropriate qualified engineer to visit
  • allow access to our insurance and service contractors to service and inspect the equipment to keep you safe

What our responsibilities are

We have a contractor who services and maintains all lifting equipment. We also hold documents of the service reports.

If a problem is found, the equipment will be taken out of service and fixed or replaced.

We also have annual insurance inspections on all lifting equipment.
